Second week of work in Hyderabad

So, what happened this week ? I got so see more ex-colleagues and got more work done.

Tuesday I got to see Ramesh and Aswani. Ramesh is one of the people who originally started with Colruyt India. He was there 8 years ago when I came the first time but left the company since then. He took me to the Beach House which was a bit hidden but a very nice venue. I had some fish which was very well prepared. It included vegetables. It has been soooo long 🙂

It was great catching up with Ramesh. We talked about married life, kids and movies.

Ramesh also contacted Aswani who was working not far away. He managed to drop by. This biggest news is that he got married beginning of April. It was a “love-arranged” marriage and they both are very happy. Aswani, I wish you and your wife the very best.

Wednesday I had another long day. Together with Santosh I worked some more on introducing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 (RHEL7). But before that, dinner.

Everybody is talking about it right now: Haleem. Even more, Hyderabadi Haleem. This is a special dish which is mainly served during the Ramadan. At that moment, it’s a big thing. You see stalls all over the city which serve it. For the Belgians: you can compare it with “vol-au-vent” but a lot thicker and made with mutton meat (although there is also chicken and even vegetarian haleem). Siva is crazy about it as you can see

Siva says: "Haleem is all mine !!!!"

This is a 4 person bucket but knowing him, he can finish it all by himself.

I had one as well of course. It’s good (especially with the right spices) and I will have one more next week. It’s a lot of meat though !

Thursday was a shorter working day. At the end, there was a special celebration. The new car had arrived. Everybody was pretty excited about it. Even Hari came to have a look. It’s looking nice and very comfortable. Of course, first a blessing was needed at the temple, along with the offerings (you can still see the decorations).

The proud drivers with their new car. It just came from it's blessing. The decorations are part of the blessing.

That evening, Danny, Caroline and me (re)visited the Flying Spagetti Monster (but not in the new car). This time I had a pasta which is very well done. Danny and Caroline also enjoyed the food and the menu there. Reading the menu is a good way to get into the mood 🙂

And then we’re Friday. A whole day of training on RHEL7 to the team. It went well and they were glad to have an overview of all the changes. After work, some of the colleagues helped me prepare idli. I have been talking about this the whole time, and now, finally, I got to prepare it myself from scratch ! That was a lot of fun. Just not to forget, the easy recipe is:

  • soak the urad dal (and rice) for a couple of hours. The recipe calls for 1 cup of dried dal with 2 cups of dried rice.
  • grind these into a thick but smooth paste.
  • add a little bit of salt.
  • add water to reach the correct consistency.
  • put in the idli plates and cook until a probe (back of spoon, toothpick, …) comes out pretty clean.
  • take out the plates and let sit for a while. This will make the idli firmer.

It turned out pretty well. The eating experts 😉 all said that it was pretty good. Leaving the batter in the fridge for a day will make them softer. I noticed that with the second batch where the batter had been staying at room temperature for some time.

That was a lot of fun 🙂 Thanks guys.

Pictures will come once Santosh sends them to me.
