Hey everyone,
He're some sights that we saw yesterday on the whale watching trip. The day before, it was too windy with 30 knots winds and 5 foot waves. Most of the people on the boat were sick so the captain decided to turn around. How did I do ? Well, taking into account we went through pretty bad weather on sea when I was little with no adverse effect on me or my sister, I took my chances without medication. And you know what ? There was no problem :-) After that eventful trip (due to the weather), we went back and got a voucher for another time.
Needless to say that I was standing in line again the next day. This time, the weather was still very sunny and the wind a lot less. While going to the feeding spot, we got to race (well, they raced us) some birds and got to see a seal bobbing in the water. Traveling full speed on the boat was a load of fun. Here's the boat:
After a (now) nice and quiet tour out of the harbor ("full speed ahead"), we go to the feeding grounds. First we looked around. A friendly seal bobbed up and down to greet us already :-). And then ... whale spotted. It was a rare species none the less: a Right Whale. Carefully, we backed off in order to not endangeour it (getting hurt by boats is one of the main problems for whales, besides hunting of course). We got a couple of good glimpses of it before it moved off.
The search continues and this time, it's a Sei Whale that we spot. Another rare species that was first spotted again last year after an absense of 8 years. Good signs here.
But the grand finale what not there yet. These other whales were skim feeding, so you didn't get the spectacular sights that are promoted so often. We continued looking to see if we could find Humpback Whales.
Guess what, we found them. Guess what, it was a whole pack of them. Guess what, they were feeding all around us using their special bubble-net techniques. With this, one or more whales blow bubbles in ever-smaller circles. From the boat, it looks like this: . The fish get driven into the middle of this net. This gives a nice concentrated fish soup for them to swallow up.
From the middle of this net net, the whales go up with mounth wide open and enjoy what the ocean gives them. I don't have a good picture of this, but is a video good enough for you ? Click and enjoy :-) Warning, this is 40 MByte so don't try this on a slow link.
